KTM 990 Supermoto T ABS

KTM 990 Supermoto T ABS powered by a liquid-cooled 115bhp V-Twin engine, the long-distance supermoto SMT also boasts Brembo radial four pot callipers which, KTM claim, “results is a sensitive ABS braking system that lets the 990 SMT stop safely and with pinpoint accuracy on any surface and from any speed.”

Designed specifically to be as minimal as possible and using what KTM dubs “rollover detection,” the system can be turned off manually for stints in the dirt.

Considered by some a 990 Super Duke equipped for extended-range comfort and fitted with standard detachable soft luggage, the bike features long-travel suspension and an upright seating position, while the fairing and flyscreen provide wind protection.

The KTM 990 Supermoto T is likely to be a true competitor for bikes like the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Touring, Yamaha Super Tenere, BMW RT1200GS, and other road-going adventure bikes that feature the braking technology.

Color range for the 2011 KTM 990 SMT includes black, orange and white.

KTM 1198 RC8R

KTM, long known only for its highly capable off-road bikes, is doing it by being different – mostly. One look at the 2010 KTM 1190 RC8R is all it takes to know that it wasn't designed by an Italian. KTM is based in Austria (as is designer Gerald Kiska who has worked with KTM since 1991) just a day ride over Stelvio Pass from Italy, but there's no mistaking KTM's non-Italian Teutonic design language. Perhaps the distinctive design of the RC8R is the result of Austria’s location snuggled between Italy and Germany: the cold, engineering-driven German influence blended with the romance of Latin Europe.
Opinions about the beauty of the KTM RC8R vary wildly, but no one will ever call it boring or uninspired.

Opinions about the beauty of the KTM RC8R vary wildly, but no one will ever call it boring or uninspired.

The RC8R’s chiseled design creates a sensation wherever it stops. If an F-117 stealth fighter crashed into a motorcycle factory, the RC8R would be the likely result. Slim and angular, and swaddled with matte-black paint, it looks stealthy, even if its radar-evading qualities are dubious. Although few would describe the black and orange machine as “pretty,” we admire the courage to step outside of the well-worn sportbike design box with its bold origami shape. Opinions vary.

“Angular shapes and bold use of black, white and orange color scheme makes the KTM a clear standout in styling in the liter class, possibly rivaled only by BMW’s new S1000RR,” says MO’s Senior Editor, Pete Brissette.

“They say there’s a fine line separating genius from lunacy, and for the RC8 there’s a fine line between distinctive styling from downright repugnance – you choose,” observes Tom Roderick, MO guest rider and freelance journalist.

KTM’s compact LC8 V-Twin is used as a stressed member to augment the large-tube chromoly steel frame.

Like the Ducati, KTM’s top-line superbike is powered by a liquid-cooled V-Twin, although here, too, it is done a little different. Its cylinders are set at 75 degrees rather than the Duc's traditional 90-degree Vee for a more compact arrangement. The non-R RC8 makes do with 1148cc and 15 horsepower less than the R’s claimed 170 crankshaft hp made at 10,250 rpm. The R has several high-tech features such as titanium intake valves, a lofty 13.5:1 compression ratio and a low-friction DLC treatment on its camshafts’ finger followers. Peak torque of 90.7 ft-lbs from the Rotax engine is said to arrive at 8000 rpm. We discovered nearly 150 horses pushing the back wheel when we had four-time AMA tuner of the year Carry Andrew strap it to the Hypercycle dyno.

While KTM builds its own frames from large-tube chromoly steel, it sources high-end componentry from world leaders like Brembo and Marchesini across the Dolomite Mountains. Fuel injection comes from Keihin in Japan.

KTM 1198 RC8R Race

FIM Superstock legal, the 2011 KTM 1198 RC8 R Track makes 180hp with the included Akrapovic EVO exhaust system (up 13hp from the road-legal 1198 RC8 R). The 1198 RC8 R Track also includes a new air filter, a thinner head gasket, and a revised engine map for race use, which help make additional power for race usage.

Everything street-related has been removed from the 2011 KTM 1198 RC8 R Track, making the bike even lighter than the svelte road version. The wiring harness has been re-worked with dismantling in-mind, which every track day enthusiast will enjoy while wrenching from the pits.

The RC8R Track, which doesn’t come with headlamps, turn-indicators and other street paraphernalia, gets a new white/orange paintjob, Akrapovic EVO 4 exhaust, new fuel-injection mapping, Dunlop slicks, Brembo monobloc brake callipers, uprated WP suspension components with more adjustability and adjustable subframe, handlebars and footpegs. Oh, and to remind you that this is the racing-only version, it also has a thinner seat.

KTM DUKE 125

The Duke 125 will serve entry-level riders, with Europe adopting a graduated licensing system that caps engine displacement at 125cc for beginners. The little Duke gets its go from a 124.7cc Single. The four-stroke single-cylinder is liquid-cooled, with a four-valve head actuated by dual overhead cams. A low-slung exhaust exits directly behind the engine and under the swingarm, Buell-like in its appearance.

Bosch fuel injection feeds the 125, with claimed power production topping out at 15 horsepower at 10,500 rpm and 8.9 lb-ft torque at 8000 rpm. A six-speed transmission transmits the beginner-friendly pony production to the rear wheel via chain drive.

The Duke 125 frame is chromoly trellis, with steel subframe. WP suspension units consist of an inverted 43mm fork and rear shock, with both units delivering 6.3 inches of travel. Brakes were developed with Brembo with single disc units in the front and rear.

The Duke will target entry-level riders in Europe, where a limit is set on engine sizes of 125cc for beginners.
Styling of the small Duke befits its larger-displacement siblings, but KTM’s learner Duke weighs in at a diminutive 282 pounds, including a full 2.9-gallon tank. Seat height is 31.9 inches.

Euro youngsters may long for the performance of the more potent Dukes, but while they pay their dues in the EU’s tiered licensing at least they can look the part with the new 125.

Fantastic Penton / KTM "Oldie" Jack Pine Special Supermoto.

Double post from the two-stroke page.

I get some good traffic over here from the PentonUSA.org folks so every now and then I like to go over and see what they're up to.  Great bunch of folks and if you're even remotely interested in old Penton or KTM motorcycles (or any old dirtbike from that era) then go pay em a vist.  Great Stuff!

Anyway while I was snooping around over there I stumbled across this beauty.  I love this sort of treatment.   I was very tempted to buy a similarly built bike a while back that was based on an XT500.  It's one of the styles of bikes that really shine when "modernized".  Power should NOT be a problem and I imagine she handles brilliantly.

Mr JC Hubbard had the breakdown in his post as follows:
'77 Penton 175 Engine with Lectron Carb

    '77 Penton MC5 Frame & Tank
    '80 KTM 175 Swingarm
'89 KTM GS 125 Forks, Wheels, Brakes
    '78 KTM Torque Pipe
    Trail Tech Cannondale Odo/Speedo
    Magura Hymec Hydraulic Clutch
    Magura 167 Front Brake Master
    Kenda Tires
"Not mine, but a Very Unique project that I've helped my neighbor with. BTW,,,It's STREET LEGAL and is rode almost everyday, in nice weather!!"
Saw this on ktmtalk.com...In the "Oldie" Section Can't believe it -- but it's real...

    Thanks Gents!
