BROKEN PANES: WEATHERED RIDES

In late February, I left my home for another ride into North Carolina. Once more I decided to point the wheel and my nose toward Maggie Valley and the object of my affection: Wheels Through Time. I wanted to ride a route there I've never been on. That's getting tougher daily. But I did manage to find ONE road that I'd never been on before. OK. So it wasn't the most direct route there, who cares? In order to care about that, I'd have to care more about the destination than the ride. You know, that just ain't never gonna happen. THE RIDE IS WHAT I'M ALL ABOUT!

View Wheels Through Time less Direct Route in a larger map

I formally decide to start the ride on Flag Pond Road where it meets with TN-352. There is an old store front (now empty) where I like to stop. I love it's lines, the weathered boards, and now it appears someone has kicked in the door. I didn't take the time to investigate. But I will.

I begin to ascend the mountain. Up we go: the Lil Girl and I. We lean and twist through the bends in the road until we reach the top of the little mountain. This is where the state line is and the road now has a new designation: NC-212. I've taken several photos along this route, and it seems to be, the very same time of year. I need to be a little less predictable I think. Before too long, I come across NC-208, where you will find this Historic Marker denoting the massacre of 13 men and boys suspected of "UNIONISM". Sad marker indeed.

I must admit I love NC-208. This road is not very long, but it's edged by a powerful gushing river on one side, and stone outcroppings on the other. The river has been cutting it's way down the mountain side for a very long time and the boulders it crashes through make a fine playground for the river otters who make their home in this region. I stopped to watch the water pound it's way through a path of boulders when I sighted this little feller. I wish I had a better lens to capture him with!

I love this rest stop. While not very far into the ride, it is still a place that refreshes the lost and weary soul.

In a few short miles, I must leave NC-208 and join with US-70. This takes me into the very cool town of Hot Springs NC. This town enjoys visitors whose interests vary widely. There are hikers from the AP Trail, bikers who are traveling US-70 Scenic Route over the mountain, rafters and kayak paddlers plying the French Broad River. It's a nice rustic town. Good food, bars, and other business can be found here. But I am getting off topic. I stop only for fuel here before I continue onto NC-209. The twistiest part of the ride. It's one of those roads whose sharp hair pins, raising rocky outcrops, and sharp drop offs into steep and seemingly bottomless chasms offer excitement, wonder and beauty.

This little cabin has sat here for a long time without any sign of life to it. This time coming through, I have noticed someone is trying to "improve" the road to the cabin. Could that possibly mean the cabin will soon be occupied?

A few more miles down the road, I see NC-63. I've been wanting to come this way for some time now. It's a road I've never taken and leads ya back to Asheville. I don't take the road all the way back to Asheville. I ride quite a few miles until I see Newfound Road. I decide to see where that goes. It was also a good choice. YIKES...I'm ahead of myself! Look at some of the great shots I found here on NC-63!

Now, tell me. Do you really ever try to identify how a barn was slapped together? I love barns. Some of them were literally slapped together with poles and rough hewn lumber. While others, like this barn, had to really take some thought in order to show this kind of tapestry design on it's sides. Texture. Sometimes a photo is about texture.

Look at the route of NC-63! It's a squiggly line, up and down mountains heading south east. As I was coming down from a mountain, I saw this view. I thought my "Lil Girl" would look great here. She does!

From here it's a matter of catching Newfound Road south to US-19 and into Maggie Valley. I made my way into the wonderful Museum "Wheels Thought Time". Took about 10 shots before my battery quit on me. STUPID...I forgot to charge it before I left. But here is more of Wheels Through Time for ya!

A GOOD DAY'S RIDE, ERWIN TN, TILMAN MOUNTIAN TN, MARSHAL (NC)

I've gone over the map, and reconstructed it to actually reflect the small roads I traveled over...yesterday's map was hurriedly routed...and contains many substantial errors.  This ride actually ran me 126 miles, start to finish... It took me five hours to do...and lunch stop was a small gas station and chocolate covered mini doughnuts. YUCK!  But, here we go folks...I had a great ride!

Leaving my home in near Milligan Collage, I head into Johnson City, to Smith Brothers HD. I really didn't want to ride alone today, and thought to stop in there to see if anyone wanted to ride.  I get there, and see a radio truck from WQUT.  Also, there was one guy in the lot on his bike, he looked to be trying to settle himself in for the day there...what's up with that? Why own a bike only to sit in the HD parking lot all day?

I walk into the building, and the gal from motor-clothes spots me.  She kinda sidles over and acts like she is checking out a rack of shirts as I am getting ready to pass her, keeping her back to cameras in store, she whispers to me, "I just heard them announce over the speakers, first female to show her MC endorsement will win some kind of a prize!"

Now I'm not one to reject a gift...so out I go to my bike to get my purse.  I left it in the saddle bags. Back in I go to the parts desk, ask them if any gal has shown her DL to them yet...whammo....nope...I get a free gift pack of HD cleaning products.  OK I'm glad I went...even if it turns out the people who gather for rides had left already this morning!

I talk to a friend of mine...a mechanic, he asks me how the bike is running, I tell him it FEELS like it did when it was a spring chicken....over a 150 K miles ago...and it really does now you know...seems like a lot less vibration going on for some reason....

I skeedaddle out of there.  I hate going there...I always leave my money where I can't get at it...I'm not impressed with their proud pricey impulse items...and I really don't advertise for anyone on my tee shirts...unless I REALLY like em!  And while I have friends who are employed by Smith Brothers HD, and their service department has some TOP NOTCH service techs in it... I still don't wear their merchandise.  I've also bought HD boots from the dealer...and HD boots SUCK!

Out to my bike in the parking lot, as I'm putting my purse back in the saddle bag, another guy shows up on his bike.  Backs it into a spot along the fence and pulls out a tall boy can of fricken BEER!  Guess he's planning of sitting in the parking lot of HD and getting drunk...wow, what an exciting proposition.

Starting my Sporty up...she sounds so good...yummy in fact... I drop her into 1st, release the clutch and find my way to the street....when the way is clear...I open her up...speed clutching my way to 60MPH....quickly!  It feels good to open her up like that in just six seconds! She makes my heart sing!

I head south to Erwin. I'm still not sure if I am going to take SR 19E or not...oh oh...well it looks like NOT!  Been there done that, and I see a few other bikes taking the route.  I really don't want to be where others are right now.  I did less than a hour ago...but once on the road, once I've opened her up...she and I want to be alone.

Gassing up in Erwin, then heading out toward 19...I do actually get on that road and start up the mountain.

Funny thing happened on the way to the summit...I saw another road that veered south.  I turned around and headed on Tilson Mountain Road.  What a great mountain road!  If any of you are from around here, you really do have to ride this road.  It will ride for about 15 miles before dumping you out near Flag Pond Road.  What a fricken great ride this was!

Check out this old country store...of course, it's no longer in business anymore, but I just love the shutters on the windows...

Behind the store is this old derelict barn, just waiting for my camera to discover it!

Just before coming to Tilman Mountain Road, I snapped this photo of my bike and some distant background:

I have one more shot I want to share of the bike...here she's sporting Bandit's Bedroll... Now Bandit designed the bedroll to sit on the handlebars, but my bike has gauges there, so I've relocated my bag...and I really LIKE it!

Here is a shot of Tilman Mountain Road. The left side of the road ends in a steep ravine, and Oh, it has switch backs and hair pin turns too.

Coming down the other side of Tilman Mountain, you will encounter a varied amount of topography...and great buildings to photograph...

This abandoned home is across the street from the barn...

And these hay bales...growing grass....were on the side of the road in front of the house....

You'll run out of road on Tilman...run into something else, and then fall into Flag Pond Road.  This is a real nice little road, it seems to run to I-26, then run away...reminds me of my puppy, when he's playing...never really wanting you to catch him...very much like Flag Pond Road...never really wanting to be caught by I-26...it runs up and down rocky mountain sides...into great little valleys...around granite rock faces...you can look down into the valley and see your trek behind you...and it feels good.

Here is a house that appears to be in the midst of an upgrade. No one is living in it, but it sure looks as if some loving hands have been taking care of it.  Look beyond the house a bit...you see the granite rock face? What an inspiring view!  And of course...what "ginger bread" house would be complete without a cemetery on a hill above it?

This Amish Quilt pattern on the side of the drying shed...is very pretty...I saw several, but mostly on the way home...and I was running late...this one, was on one of the very small roads as I was trying to head west toward Marshall NC.

This is US 70 North heading toward Greenville from Marshall.  It's the last picture I got...I was late and my puppy needed to get out to pee!

Wow, wild week...glad to be home!

    Hey y'all...
Many of you don't know, I was away for the last 7 days. I was invited by the West Virgina Board of Tourism, to attend a tour of West Virgina, on motorcycles. We (11 other moto-journalists and I) rode motorcycles through 4 sections of West Virgina, guided by experienced motorcyclists who were very enthusiastic about showing us the sights of their wonderful state.

I am not able to tell you more or show you pictures at this time about the "FAM TOUR" as they called it...I have promised to save this for WWW.bikernet.com

What I can show you is my trip back home...the map above is my route...exactly 300 miles back home....

In the next few days, please watch for the pictures and the story of my ride back home...I will also let you know when you can find the story at Bikernet....
Thanks...everyone of you for coming to see what I'm up to...I will try very hard in the next few days not to disappoint...
    So for now...
    Please be well...

Sunday's ride...with Paul Cox....

My long time readers know...I don't ride well with others anymore...but a week or so ago...a guy I talked to up in Mountain City TN contacted me on my email...asked if I wanted to ride...he was headed to Cherokee Lake, I've never really spent any time in that area, so...yeah, I'll ride...I'll ride anywhere...

This is Paul...we were on a 2 lane country road, and I love getting shots of friends and riding buddies as we make our way down the road...here Paul and I were moving a clipping pace of about 55 to 60 MPH....Paul was a good rider to hang the day with...

This is a map of our ride...a good day of riding...and while I didn't stop to get all the pictures I would have if traveling alone, I did manage to get a few shots of interest.

I've seen postcards with this barn, and my brother's train club has a scene with it as well....

Here is a great photo of Cherokee Lake...many people will recognize where this view is at...RT. 25 South, coming out of the mountains to the north...I really like this view...

We crossed over a bridge, as I was looking off to my left, I noticed a dam...

I turned off to get shots of the dam...and was kinda side tracked by this...an old time Baptist baptism....

When the dunkin was over....out came the accordion.... Now we gather at the riiiiiver.....

I was wondering...would the water rise suddenly? Of course nothing of the sort happened....

There was so much more to the ride...but I just couldn't stop everywhere I would have if I were riding alone...I'm going back on this route again...you will love some of the stuff I didn't get...I want to show you what I saw...
But for now...this is what we have...I hope you enjoy the photos...

NE TN to KC MO, summer of '08

Riding from Johnson City Tn. to Kansas City MO.

The ride was fairly uneventful, of course there are some Small adjustments that had to be made, but...after a thousand miles, I can honestly say I hadn't had any problems with inattentive drivers, or with drivers who just didn't give a rats ass. I rarely do though once on the road proper. In fact, it's rare I have problems with bad drivers....once in a blue moon. How often do they come around anyway?

    Photobucket

Jumping on I-81 and heading west towards Nashville....by the time I got to Knoxville I was bored out of my mind. I stopped and consulted the map for an alternate route north for my foray into KY. It was the interstate I-75 turn to bore me to death now....that continued until I got to the state line of KY.

    Photobucket

I pulled off the road into a truck stop in KY, sat down to consult the map once more, when I realized the weather channel was on TV. I heard them talking about Indiana. WHAT was that about FLOODING? OH yeah they were talking about the INDY area...that's where I was heading to get to 2-Guns and Clem and Peaches....I-70 Closed...I-65 closed...due to flooding. Photobucket Both roads were instrumental for me getting to as well as away from the INDY area. I look at my cell phone and there was a call from Peaches...yuppers, she verifies the storms in that area and suggests I try getting there another time...GOOD IDEA! I go to call My friend 2GUNS and realize, I must have had another blond moment before I left; because when I programed his phone number into my phone, it didn't take...no 2Guns in my phone book. OPPS...sorry guy!

SOOOO....I go back to the atlas...and check out other routes for Kansas City MO. I'm bored off my rocker with the Interstate systems...looking for some good local twisty roads that will get me off the four lanes and onto some good state and county maintained roads. I found em! I jumped on 25 North for about 18 miles until it intersected with KY-92 West. Cool move there slick...nice road, two lane, well maintained, a few nice twists...nothing drastic....it even came with a few farm tractors, taking to the road as they moved from one field to another... I loved it!

    Photobucket

Most all the farmers were out cutting hay that Sat. morning and the smell of freshly cut grass, (much different than lawn mowing cut grass smell) was in the air...I fell in love with the small farming towns I passed through in KY...

It appears to be legal to smoke in some public buildings! It was 94 degrees in the shade and I was dehydrating quickly. I wanted a smoke and some Ice Tea....I was looking desperately for a bar so I could smoke and enjoy my ice tea with air conditioning....none to be had in small town KY....so I stopped at a little country store that had a gas station. I went inside and my nostrils were assaulted with that ghastly smell of stale cigarette smoke! How wonderful? There was a small dining area and there were ASHTRAYS at every table! YEAH! So I retrieved a tall water from the coolers, paid for it, sat at a table and lit up a smoke.

As I was settling in, I noticed a small boy watching me. After a time his Dad noticed me as well and started talking to me... good guy ...not real talkative, but just enough to break up the boredom for both of us. I was wearing my leather chaps...they are oil soaked on the left leg....and bug encrusted on both legs...the kid was fascinated with the bugs...he kept telling me about this dragon fly or that small unidentifiable mess that was on this leg or the other... I find travels and kids to be of small wonders!

    Photobucket

Well, time to move on....KY-92 eventually joined up with KY-90 West, and I moved on that road for about 15 miles until I found the Cumberland Highway. I found myself heading west once again. This turned out to be another interstate type road, but time was getting on and I needed to make some tracks towards I-65 North.

    Photobucket

It was all quite uneventful...nothing of particular interest to stop and photograph...so I just kept heading north from Bowling Green on I-65 until I hit Louisville in KY. There I picked up I-64 West...taking that into ST. LOUIS.

I stopped and stayed the night after crossing into Indiana. Photobucket I was beat up by the sun, the heat, and the road. It was 7.30 PM and I was just looking for that air conditioned comfort and a gallon of Ice Tea. I found both at the Super Eight that night...my room even had a Jacuzzi in it. I had a good night, and sleep fitfully until 2 am....where I wondered through the halls looking for the stupid snack machine...I found it on the main floor, in my PJ's....where one could buy a regular sized candy bar for 1.50 cents....YOUR SHITTIN me right? I needed a chocolate fix...I paid for the fricken candy bar...stupid! Photobucket

Finally fell asleep at five am...woke again at 7.30. Went down stairs for continental breakfast...went back upstairs and grabbed all my gear. Got packed and back on the road by 9.15.

Another uneventful day on the road, I hit ST.LOUIS in a bored way...I couldn't believe it...there was no fricken traffic on the highway...none! It was heaven...if I wasn't on an interstate in ST. LOUIS...it runs through the poorest parts of that town, and ya really don't wanna stop there for a breakdown or anything...so keep on trucking though old girl...keep on trucking through.

    Photobucket

I've spent some time in ST.LOUIS before, so stopping there didn't quite blow my dress up...moving along the interstate 64 You can watch the great ARCH of the Gateway to the West come into sharp focus on your left...it's a true wonder of the modern world. I recommend stopping in to visit if you've never seen it up close before. Yes It's worth braving downtown ST. Louis for...better at night though!

After leaving ST. Louis, the Interstate merges with I-70 west and you travel the rest of the trip into Kansas City on that Interstate.Once again, moving along that road wasn't bad, there was light traffic all the way. I could see the Missouri River flooding over it's banks as I passed above it and around it in several areas, as well as all the other local and smaller waterways. I'm so glad I don't live here...I hate floods. Photobucket

I'm now 50 miles east of Kansas City, and I call my daughter for directions into her house. No I've never been here before. She hands the phone over to her husband...my daughter gets lost trying to get her hand out of a paper bag....good thing she has this good man to get her around KC.

I get the directions, then I get a warning...more rain. Severe threats they say...I look in the general direction....I don't see nuthin....keep on moving on!

OK, I'm in Kansas and the skies look real bad...nasty black roiling clouds above me, the temps have dipped a bit...I'm just crossing fingers hoping I will get to my daughter's house before the rain comes down.

NOPE...get on the 435 by pass and down comes the rain, the temps dropped even more...it was cold as shit. No problem...really, I like riding in the rain. Oh no....now come the winds. I'm riding on grooved cement....rain, wind, and grooved cement make for lethal combinations. I kept riding...then I came across a bridge and the crosswinds were the nastiest things I have ever encountered. I have encountered what I thought were severe cross winds before, after all, I've traveled throughout the West, over mountain passes and gorges but this scared me.

I could feel the tires of my bike losing contact with the slippery road surface as the bike and I drifted over towards the wall of the bridge...we drifted over a full lane and a half! 2 Feet from the wall...I was shitting myself by that time...couldn't wait to get off the bridge and find an exit....whew...there''s one...hey, it says there are casinos here! Whoo hoo! I don't gamble, but I know they have good security in their garages, I can unpack my shit, call my daughter to come get me...lock the bike, and leave it there for the evening, which is what I did. Photobucket
I slept like a baby that night...felt good to lie down....

Now I wonder what's gonna happen next?
